Neonatal abstinence syndrome occurs when a mother uses certain substances while pregnant that later cause withdrawal in the neonate. Substances can be legal or illegal, prescribed or not prescribed to the woman. It is often nurses who assess the newborn and identify the signs and symptoms of NAS. This presentation provides an overview of NAS, the treatment of the condition, and nursing’s role in NAS.
